BARRING ANY immediate government intervention, the lives of police personnel, families and suspects held at the Nsawam police station would be in grave danger due to the rickety nature of the building. The situation is so bad that any heavy rains with deadly thunderstorms will reduce the one storey building to ground zero. The most intriguing aspect of the whole situation is that the police station is situated in the middle of the Nsawam Township and at the entrance of the road where politicians, businessmen, government officials and other senior officers of the service drive past everyday. The building which was built during the colonial days is in its deplorable state to the extent that, whenever it rains the whole station is submerged in water to the extent that officers have to abandon their offices. The investigation further revealed that when it rains, not only is the police station submerged in water, but it leaks profusely through the big holes in the roofing with marks and traces of soaked water in the ceilings. According to close sources at the station, whenever it rains the whole charge office and the cells become flooded to the point that officers have to handcuff suspects or guide them and move them to safety until the water is collected or sometimes left for days before being drained. It got to a time we had to transfer suspects to nearby police stations to avoid being drowned in the cells, a situation which is common during the raining season, the source said. The papers information further revealed that some years ago, a private Television Station in Accra aired the deplorable nature of the Police Station, where the commanding officer and other service personnel were called to the headquarters and cautioned about the source of the publication. However, many years after, the situation seems to be worsening each passing day without anything being done to avert the impending disaster.
