Eight Rescued Trafficked Victims Reintegrated With Families

The Ghana Embassy in Guinea has assisted the Police Service in rescuing eight victims including a 16 year old boy, Amadu Rufai, who were trafficked into Guinea. A press release signed by the Eastern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, ASP Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, stated that, the victims were rescued on May 13, this year and have since been re-integrated with their families at Nsawam and its environs. According to the release, the victims were transported on board a canoe from Ningo to Guinea and were made to engage in fishing where they spent ten days on the high seas before returning to Guinea. The statement added that, the victims were exposed to severe weather conditions and hunger without being paid. The victims therefore, had no means of returning to Ghana until they were rescued through a collaborative effort of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Embassy in Conakry, Guinea. The release indicated that, the eight victims were between age 16 and 32 years. According to the statement, the Ghana Police Service has been receiving human trafficking cases in recent times and therefore the Eastern Regional Police Command is appealing to members of fishing communities in the country to report people who claim to be employing fishermen into lucrative fishing industry in other countries to the Police. The statement further indicated that other victims including children are still in Guinea and Sierra Leone and are yet to be rescued.
