An Accra Circuit Court, yesterday, remanded a 22 year old boy, Yaw Abu Bonsrah, into police custody for allegedly possessing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp (wee). Abu Bonsrah, who was arraigned before the court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri, was said to have in his possession a sack and polythene bag containing dried leaves. Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Prosecutor Inspector Kwabena Adu said on April 15, 2014, at about 7:45 a.m., a team of police officers, led by Chief Superintendent Kwadwo Antwi Tabi of the Dansoman Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service, embarked on an exercise to flush out criminals from their hideouts. During the course of the operation, the police had information that the accused person was dealing in local gin (Akpeteshie) mixed with the leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. �The suspect had wind of the exercise, and escaped from the house before the police got to the scene. His house was searched, where a sack and a black polythene bag containing dried leaves, as well as local gin mixed with the leaves, were found in the room of the suspect,� Inspector Adu told the court. He further told the court that the exhibit was brought to the police station for examination and results. Inspector Kwabena Adu also added that on April 27, 2014, the police received information that the accused person had resurfaced and was about leaving the vicinity. The police went in and apprehended him whilst he was standing by a vehicle at the Dansoma beach road. During the course of investigations, the suspect admitted ownership of the sack and polythene containing the dried leaves, as well as the plastic container containing the local gin mixed with the dried leaves. He would reappear on June 13, 2014 for continuation of the hearing. In a related development, a 52 year old man, William Suni, was sentenced to one year imprisonment for possessing parcels of Indian hemp. The judge, Mr. Francis Obiri, in giving his judgment, said: �at his age, he (William Suni) should know better and advise the young ones to refrain from the act.� The position of the Judge was, however, ably seconded by a friend of the court, who reiterated that with the age of William Suni, he should not have involved himself with issues of narcotics. The facts of the case, according to Inspector Kwabena Adu, were that the accused person is unemployed and resident at Dansoman. He said on May 21, 2014, police personnel on snap-check duty at James Town Pasico, intercepted a 207 Benz bus, and while conducting a search on it found six small parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in a teddy bear with the suspect. Subsequently, Inspector Adu said the accused was arrested and handed over to the James Town Police, after he admitted ownership of the stuff.
