World Cup 2014: Dumsor Can Trigger Instability -Says Security Expert

A security expert is advising government to, as matter of urgency, assist managers of the power sector to solve the countrys unending power crisis before the start of the World cup tournament next week. According to the expert who does not want his name mentioned, the inability of government to provide the citizenry, majority of who are passionate football lovers with steady and reliable power supply during the world cup matches could trigger serious disturbances in the country. Inherent in a likely protest against unstable and unreliable power supply, the security expert warned are dangers that could blossom into mass actions against government with unimaginable consequences. Barely 10 days to the start of the 2014 World cup in Brazil, soccer fans in Ghana are warning the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to as a matter of necessity, provide them with regular and adequate power to enable them watch the matches. They have threatened a showdown with officials of ECG if they continue with the ongoing power rationing exercise during the June 12 to July 13, 2014 world cup tournament. Some of them are reported to have vowed to match in their numbers to offices of the power distributor if they experience power cuts during the Mundial, especially when the senior national soccer team is in action. The country is currently faced with challenges at the power sector as a result of which interrupted power supply is no longer guaranteed. ECG earlier this year published time table of an ongoing load shedding exercise. Managers of the power sector have adduced several reasons as cause of the power cuts and have assured the populace that they are working around the clock to solve the almost cyclical problem. But football loving fans have pooh pooh the explanations, insisting that all we want is uninterrupted power to watch the matches because we cant afford to miss any of the 52 games. Media reports quoted a fan, Kwame Ofori saying I hope that they put an end to this dum sor dum sor thing and make sure they put things in order before the most prestigious tourney. I do not want to miss a single game at all We anticipate that during the upcoming tournament in June, the same trend is going to continue because all promises of the ECG have been in vain and nothing has been done. They also know that Ghanaians cannot take them on. Ghana will play its first match against USA at Arena das Dunas, Natal on June 16 before facing Germany on June 21 at the Estafio Castelao, Fortaleza and end its group stage match with Portugal on June 26 at the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha, Brasilia.
