Mineworkers To Strike If Newmont Lays Off Workers

The Ghana Mineworkers Union (GMWU) has threatened to embark on an industrial action if Newmont goes ahead to sack 600 of its workers this year. Newmont has announced it will have to lay off the workers by the end of the second quarter of this year. According to the mining giant the move is part of efforts to improve and ensure cost and operational efficiency. But the move has received some stiff opposition from the Ghana Mineworkers Union. General Secretary of the Union, Prince William Ankrah tells Citi Business News Newmont cannot take such a unilateral action whilst the two parties have a case pending at the National Labour Commission. when you are discussing a deal you cannot unilaterally go ahead and do what you like, yesterday they threatened to go ahead with the lay off and we dared them to go ahead. We believe we should talk so both parties understand each other, this is not the first time we are doing this, last year we met, so we are surprised they want to go ahead with that decision. Citi business news has learnt the two parties will be meeting the national labor commission on the matter today. Prince William Ankrah tells Citi Business News the labour commission will have to rule on the matter.
