Three Men Busted For Attempted Fraud

A man who posed as a police officer and two accomplices are in the grip of the police for allegedly harassing a Russian national and attempting to dupe her of GH�70,000. The three suspects, who are currently in police custody, are Timothy Asare, 44, alias, �Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) �Amoako, Frank Amankwah, 48 and Samuel Obeng, 40, all traders. The Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Timothy Yoosa Bonga, told journalists that the victim, Marine Kovshova, 33, reported to the police that a man who identified himself as Timothy Asare had been harassing her with telephone calls. Marine, according to the deputy commander, told the police that the caller claimed he was a policeman attached to the Interpol Department at the Police Headquarters in Accra. Among other things, the caller is said to have told the complainant that she had defrauded one Raz of one million dollars and that she was being given the opportunity to solve the issue amicably. The self-styled police officer then directed Marine to meet him with GH�70,000 as part-payment for the said debt. She was advised to comply with the order to pre-empt the case from being published in the media as well as her deportation from Ghana. National security The police said Marine informed her legal adviser about the order from the caller and the lawyer arranged with a national security operative to track the caller. �She was, therefore, advised to feign interest in the deal and on June 1, 2014, the caller asked her to meet him behind the police headquarters with the money.� Under the surveillance of the national security operative, Marine met the fake policeman who was accompanied by Amankwah and Obeng. While in the process of receiving the money, the security operative arrested them.
