Seven people died in two separate accidents in the Western and Eastern Regions at the weekend The first involved four members of the Jehovah�s Witnesses Church who got drowned in River Furred on Saturday evening. The four including a woman and her baby, were travelling together with other members of the church from Sikaniasem to Kutukrom in the ELlembelle District of the Western Region when the boat ferrying them capsized. Those rescued, were taken to a local clinic near Kutukrom where they were treated and discharged. The second involved two students of the Ho Nursing Training College and a driver. This was on last Friday when the vehicle on which they were travelling on the Apirede-Aseseeso road in the Eastern Region veered off into a ditch. The bodies of the two students identified as Mavis Mawuli, 23, and Richard Zakor, 21, have been deposited at the Atua Government Hospital Mortuary. Those who were injured were rushed to the Koforidua, Tetteh Quashie and Volta Regional hospital for treatment. Briefing the Times on the first accident, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Nwonsori, the crime Officer at the Prestea police station, said at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, seven members of the Jehovah�s Witnesses Church were travelling from Sikaniasem to Kutukrom for worship when their canoe hit a tree and capsized. Three of them whose names were not disclosed, were rescued and rushed to a local clinic for treatment. However, the woman with a baby on her back and two others were washed away and efforts were being made to retrieve their bodies. ASP Nwinsori advised people travelling on rivers to be careful with the rains since they can cause havoc. On the second accident, the Eastern Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Chiefs Superintendent Samuel Tetteh, told The Ghanaian Times that at about 4:30 p.m. last Friday, the students in four different vehicles were travelling from Aburi to Ho after a field trip to Mampong. He said the driver of one of the vehicles belonging to the Mawuli Senior High School, carrying 70 students lost control, while negotiating a sharp curve and veered into a ditch killing the two students and the driver. Chief Supt. Tetteh attributed the accident to poor visibility due to a heavy downpour on Friday. He advised drivers to be careful when sing the road to prevent accidents. Meanwhile, Kafui reports that 47 of the students are receiving treatment at the Volta Regional hospital in Ho.
