Photo Up Date Of Flooded Communities At Glefe, Opetekwei & Others

The large volumes of water which flooded Opetekwei, Glefe, Wiaboman near Dansoman in Accra have partially dried up. Some of the victims can now heave a sigh of relief but their destroyed belongings have gone forever. As at yesterday, the said communities were submerged by large volumes of gushing water from the Weija Dam spillage. The affected residents were forced to sought solace with friends and families in the unaffected communities. But the situation seems different today. The Ghana Armed Forces sent about three of their metal canoes through the Pambros Salt Companys premises enroute to Wiaboman to assess the severity of the flooded. Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) were also in the company of the soldiers. Excavators have been moved to the flooded zone close to the sea to create drainage by dredging to allow the stagnant water to return to the sea. Though the water level has reduced and dried up in some homes, others remain flooded. Road paths are now quite better than yesterday but, the filth continue to mount in homes and along the streets. G.Be.C Preparatory and Junior High School (J.H.S.) have become muddy and still hold a lot of water in the schools' premises. The Headmaster of the Basic School, Mr Daniel Nana Sarpong Mantey told our newsman, Kwasi Agyeman that; the flood has closed down the School abruptly. Over 160 pupils are now at home and do not know when academic work will resume. Mr Mantey has therefore managed to clean one of the flooded class rooms for the final year J.H.S students for a brush up for their B.E.C.E which commence on Monday, June 16, 2014. However, the traditional rulers have attributed the floods to non performing of rituals customarily to avert the anger of the gods. They contend that, until State officials bring herds of sheep, bottles of schnapps for traditional prayers, the gods will not take it kindly and more disaster could follow. Reports gathered indicate that, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo has been tasked to yield to the request by the traditional authorities. Check today's photos
