Volta Queenmothers Club Supports Educational Development

The Volta Queenmothers Club, a voluntary association of queenmothers from some traditional areas in the Volta Region, has initiated a project to assist deprived communities to lift the standard of education in the region. As part of the project, the club has started distributing learning materials to certain kindergartens in basic schools at Vakpo in North-Dayi District, Logba Akusame in Afadjato South District and Battor-Tsikor in the North Tongu District. Making a presentation at Vakpo and Logba Akusame respectively, the paramount queenmother of Alavanyo Traditional Area, who is the President of the club, Mamaga Ametor II, said the association acknowledged that in the past, women in the communities left their children under the care of queenmothers until they returned from the farm. She said the queenmothers had revisited that old tradition in order to contribute their quota to the development of the school system to take good care of children. Role of queenmothers Mamaga Ametor said the role of queenmothers could not be underestimated because they championed the cause of identity, discipline, personal hygiene, morality, the education of children, cohesion of families and peace and unity in communities. At the Vakpo-Adomi RC Basic School, the North-Dayi District Chief Executive, Mr Stephen Timinka, commended the queenmothers for their gesture, and said it was a demonstration of good leadership. An assistant director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) directorate in North-Dayi, Mr Michael Honu, also said the gesture was a demonstration of the concept of Private-Public Partnership (PPP) and was unique for a young district such as North-Dayi. At Logba-Akusame, a representative of the head teacher of the school, Mr Cosmas Ayivor, said education at the kindergarten level was crucial for the child and that had made the community conscious to initiate the construction of a permanent block for the kindergarten in the community.
