Alarming Photos: Weija Dam Has Developed Deep Cracks

The 36 year old Weija Dam which serves over 2.5 million people at Accra East and West potable drinking water from the Ghana Water Company has developed deep cracks. The five concrete water channels of the dam have visible cracks which is quite frightening. Our sources also indicate that the cracks can also be found beneath the channels. Residents close to the dam defecate along the banks of the Densu River. Stench of the in sanitary conditions in the vicinity is disturbing. The dam was established by the late General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong government in 1978 and covers about 9000 square hectares. In a related development, the Weija area which got flooded last week following the Dam spillage still persists. Over one hundred houses are still trapped by volumes of stagnant water. This is due to non availability of drainage system to allow the water some passage. The affected residents have vacated their homes and are putting up with friends and family members. They spoke to our newsman, Kwasi Agyeman when he visited the flooded area at Weija old barrier down called Mandela.
