Market Goes To Waste

The chiefs and people of Tanodumase in the Atwima-Mponua District have appealed to the government to act without delay to save a market built under the Agricultural Sector Improvement Project (ASIP) from going to waste. They said traders are unable to operate from there because the pavements and floors were not compacted rendering the place soggy with any slight rainfall, adding that the market was built to assist boost farming. Mr Abdulai Dramani, the assembly member, said they found it deeply troubling to see the huge resources pumped into the project go down the drain due a construction defect, something that could be corrected. He said this when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) led by its General Manager, Dr Bernard Otabil, visited the community under STAR-Ghanas media auditing and tracking of development projects to put the spotlight on how governments resources are helping to transform the lives of the people. The goal is to aid the promotion of transparency and accountability in local governance. Mr Dramani said he had done everything to persuade the district assembly to step in to fix the problem but without success. It was built in 2001 to operate as a weekly market where farmers at Tanodumase and a number of other surrounding farming communities could easily sell their farm produce to improve on their livelihood. He said the present state of affairs was not only hurting the farmers, it was also denying the assembly of revenue. The farmers in the area now have to travel long distances to Bibiani, Goaso, Sefwi-Wiawso and other big towns to find market for their farm produce. Dr Otabil said the media auditing/tracking project was an effort by the GNA to bring to the fore development challenges of the people, particularly in rural communities.
