Fate Of Blind Woman Denied GES Appointment In Limbo

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is considering reposting a blind woman, whose appointment as head of Wa School for the Blind, has been on hold for a year. Ms Ayishetu Ibrahim was to head the Methodist School since February 1 2013 but according to Mr Alhassan Suleiman, Wa Municipal Director of Education: The Methodist church resisted her appointment because she is not one of their members, so I am now having oversight responsibility till a substantive head is appointed. Ms Ibrahim, an old student of the school, said though she feels extremely embarrassed she is going about her normal duties and would work to serve her alma mater in the best way possible. Mr Charles Parker-Allotey, GES Director of Public Relations, told Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, that the Directed-General has referred the matter to the Human Resource Directorate for advice and if necessary the Church would be called to order. He said there is however the need for cooperation between the GES and the Church to reach amicable solution. In another development, Ms Mina Mensah, Head of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, Ghana, described the action of the Church as discriminatory and violation of the womans right to equal opportunity. She wondered how government takes full responsibility of paying teachers and providing infrastructure for a mission school to oppose a person deemed to have the administrative acumen to handle a school. Ms Ibrahim holds Masters degree in Educational Administration and Management from University of Education, Winneba.
