Evacuation And Demolition Of A Three-Storey Building At Madina Taxi Rank

The La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (La-MMA) on Friday organized a four-hour exercise to evacuate tenants who lived in a dilapidated three storey building near the Madina Taxi Rank. The exercise was led by the Head of Environmental Health and Sanitation Mr. Joseph Quacoe, assisted by a police team led by the Madina Divisional Operational Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr. Man Anit Asampana and officials from NADMO, Speaking to GNA during the exercise, Mr. Joseph Quacoe said his team visited the structure and examined it and noticed that it was not habitable for human beings. He therefore served the 14 Landlords with notices. The landlords were apparently the children of a deceased owner. A month old notice asked them to relocate to have the structure demolished. The Landlords failed to comply and La MMA therefore dragged them to the Madina District Magistrate Court on May 7th where they were given orders to quit from their premises. The Landlords later returned to the court on June 12, for Stay of Execution and were given six days which elapsed on Thursday and La-MMA with the assistance of the Madina Police Command and Alhaji Imam Mohammed NADMO Co-Ordinator went to the house around 5am on Friday and ordered them to evacuate pending demolition. The occupants obediently removed their belongings in the midst of insult on the officials conducting the evacuation exercise. A by-passer whose name was not readily available, was challenging the police and was picked and sent to the police station for questioning. Speaking to GNA the NADMO Co-Ordinator Alhaji Imam Mohammed said there was nearly a fatal accident where a seven year old girl fell from the third floor of the storey building and did not die but broke her thigh and was hospitalized for months.
