7 Potential Aspirants.Too Early To Say NPP Will Go For A Special Congress - K Agyapong

General Secretary of the main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyapong has asserted that it is too early to say the party will be going for a Special Delegates Congress. On Monday, 7th July, 2014, five aspirants submitted their nomination forms at the partys headquarters. Prior to this, two had already submitted theirs; bringing the number to seven. The aspirants are: Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, Alan K. Kyerematen, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Kofi Osei Ameyaw, Francis Addai Nimoh, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng and Joe Ghartey. Per the partys constitution, if the number of aspirants exceeds five, they would have to reduce it through special voting. We cannot confirm whether or not the party will be going for a special delegates congress. We have to wait for the Vetting Committee to complete its work, Kwabena Agyapong told Kwami Sefa Kayi, host of Peace FM's Kokrokoo. According to the General Secretary, the Vetting Committee has to scrutinize all the forms submitted by the seven flagbearer aspirants and then call each of them to be vetted. He disclosed that if no issue comes up during the vetting process which will lead to the disqualification of an aspirant, all seven will be signed off as the official aspirants for the nomination of flagbearership of our party. The committee will then forward their final report to me and that is only when it will be decided whether or not we will go for a special delegates conference. He also indicated that if a candidate is disqualified by the vetting committee, he has 48 hours to appeal. By the end of July we will complete our internal arrangements and that is only when we will decide whether or not to hold a special delegates congress, Kwabena Agyapong reiterated. The one-time Press Secretary during ex-President Kufuors administration, further indicated that the party is preparing energetically to take over power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). We are preparing ourselves, we are ready to take up the governance of this countrythe party is on track and we will get down to the battle of getting our message across to the people, he said.
