Mr. Anthony Aggrey, Wassa East District Chief Executive, on Wednesday called on parents and guardians to exhibit greater commitment towards the education and proper upbringing of their wards. The role of parents and guardians in education and the proper upbringing of children cannot be underestimated particularly when they are at home, he said. Mr. Aggrey was speaking at the second graduation ceremony of the Nursery and Kindergarten of the Subri Industrial Plantation Limited (SIPL) School Complex at Daboase. About 70 pupils who have completed Nursery and Kindergarten were presented with certificates at the ceremony which was under the theme �Solid Foundation-A must for success�. Mr. Aggrey who was the guest of honour said the government and teachers were doing everything possible to ensure that children became responsible citizens but the task must be left entirely in their hands of parents. Mr. Aggrey expressed concern that some parent and guardians were shirking their responsibilities towards the education of their children. �Education and upbringing of children was a shared responsibility of stakeholders including parents and guardians�, he said. Mr. Ernest Afeku, an Assistant Director of Education at the District Education Directorate, advised teachers to work wherever they are posted to enable the country�s education to develop. He said teachers are posted to schools that need their services and not because of favouritism or tribalism. Mrs. Grace Adorsu, Head Teacher of the school, said nursery and kindergarten education was important and must not be taken for granted. She said, �Nursery and kindergarten education provided firm foundation for the academic work of children�. Mrs. Adorsu said most parents leave their children to go to school on their own which was risky and do not come for their children after school. She said parents were not providing the needed materials for their children for academic work and do not visit the school to check on the progress of their children. Mrs. Adorsu said there was the need to expand the nursery and kindergarten structures to cope with the double stream primary school system.
