The Governing Board of the National Peace Council (NPC) is collaborating with the various Regional House of Chiefs to deal with conflicts and disputes to ensure a stable society. Reverend Dr. Nii Amo Darko, member of the board, who announced this, said efforts were being made to identify the root causes of conflicts in the country and resolve them. He was inaugurating a 13-member governing Board of the Brong Ahafo regional Peace Council in Sunyani on Tuesday. The Board is to facilitate and develop mechanisms for conflict prevention, management, resolution and build sustainable peace in the region and the country. The governing boards of the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions have already been inaugurated. Rev. Darko pointed out that conflicts are unavoidable; therefore, it is the responsibility of the society to devise appropriate mechanisms to prevent them in order not to develop into violent clashes resulting in deaths. Mr. Justice Samuel Adjei, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, said the causes of conflicts in the region varied from chieftaincy, land disputes and political intolerance, therefore, the inauguration of the board was a bold and responsible step towards the promotion of peace in the area. He said it would further strengthen efforts of the Brong-Ahafo Regional Security Council and the security agencies, to seek early and lasting solutions to the numerous disputes in the region. Mr. Suallah Abduallah Quandah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Executive Secretary of the NPC, appealed to Municipal and District Chief Executives in the region, to support, the board, to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts, to build sustainable peace within their jurisdictions. We should be proactive in dealing with conflicts, and not to wait for it to escalate, for it is easier and less costly to prevent conflict to build peace than to enforce peace, he added.
