President John Dramani Mahama last Saturday joined the University of Ghana (UG) community at a remembrance service for the late Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere, a former Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university. A number of personalities, including the Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey; past vice chancellors, lecturers, other members of academia and alumni of the university attended the service. Prof. Asenso-Okyere died on May 10, this year while he was on a Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) assignment outside Ghana. He was the vice chancellor of UG from 2002-2006. Tribute In a tribute, the Minister of Education said Professor Asenso-Okyere paid his dues to the nation and would be greatly missed. The professor, she said, lived his life well and would forever be remembered by his nation and the university. She said Prof. Asenso-Okyere initiated a number of programmes and projects during his tenure as vice chancellor which went a long way to advance the cause of the university. Apart from the university community where Prof. Asenso-Okyere excelled in various capacities, the minister said he also served in various associations where his tremendous expertise came to bear on those entities. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said telling the success story of Ghana' s education could not be complete without mentioning Prof. Asenso-Okyere name. Ghana, she said, had lost a great son, but expressed the hope that his death would enable the living to learn from his good works. Prof. Aryeetey In his eulogy, Prof. Aryeetey said his former colleague was a man full of energy and industry. As an extraordinary academic, Prof. Aryeetey said Professor Asenso-Okyere also had the taste for beautiful things. �These translated into the strides the university made during his tenure,� he said. One of such remarkable initiatives was a beautification programme he launched at the university and the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). Professor Aryeetey said Prof. Asenso-Okyere's experience in research, economic development and advocacy was excellent, adding that all that had significant impact on his nation. The final funeral rites have been scheduled to take place on July 19, this year at Woraso, near Kumawu, in the Ashanti Region.
