Soldier Fires Into Crowd Killing 2

Two people died when a military man was reported to have fired into a group of rampaging youth at Xikpo, in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, on Tuesday. The bodies of Adzo Asinyo, 46, and Emmanuel Zilenvu, 22, have been deposited at the Sogakope Government Hospital. The Volta Regional Police Commander, ASP Gyinae Peterking, who disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times, said the soldier had been arrested to assist in investigations. Eye-witnesses said the youth were protesting over an incident in which a school-boy was said to have been hit by a Hyundai vehicle on Tuesday morning. The residents claimed there had been many of such accidents, resulting in needless deaths in the past six months. According to them, many appeals to the authorities to construct speed ramps on that stretch of road to prevent such accidents from happening had fallen on deaf ears. On Tuesday, the youth took the law into their own hands and blocked the main Accra-Aflao road to protest the accident involving the school boy. That led to serious vehicular traffic for well over five hours, and the military stepped in trying to restore law and order. One of the soldiers was said to have fired into the angry crowd, leading to the death of the two people. A military source said the soldiers were caught up in the traffic and decided to intervene, adding that the case was being investigated.
