The Ghana Police Service has cleared organized labour to demonstrate on Thursday against what workers say is the worsening economic conditions.
The labour unions were given the greenlight to hit the streets after meeting the requirement of the Public Order Act, Greater Accra Police PRO, DSP Freeman Tettey confirmed to Joy News Saturday.
He said the police have had a fruitful meeting with the leadership of the impending nationwide protest to streamline the exercise.
�We had a fruitful interaction with them (labour) and at the end of the day there was a consensus that the demonstration will come on,� DSP Tettey said.
When the parties met, he explained, both expressed their respective concerns but they managed to �have a common ground."
He assured that the police are adequately prepared to take care of all the security needs to regulate the protest because they will not be �so much engaged� on Thursday.
Police are now counting on the assurance of the organizers that the demonstration would be peaceful, DSP Tettey hoped.
Meanwhile, the police say they would not be able to handle two demonstrating on the same day, and have, therefore, asked a group requesting to picket on Thursday to postpone it. The group has agreed, he said.
In a related development, Edward Kareweh, General Secretary of the General Agric Workers Union, has warned employers against stopping their members from participating in the strike and street protest.
Government has asked organized labour to rescind the planned exercise but organized labour says government�s appeal is too late.
