Sempe Chief, Elders Call On Accra Mayor

Some elders of the Sempe Stool; led by the Chief of Sempe, Nii Adote Obuor II, on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije. The rationale for the call was to hand over a copy of a High Court ruling of 20th June, 2014, which recognizes Nii Adote Obuor II as the Sempe Mantse to the Mayor and also confer with him on the way forward in terms of development. Your good works are being manifested all over the city. Even though we are not there in person, we see it on the Television. So we are here to give you our full support on your activities in the areas of Education, Health, and Sanitation among others, the chiefs underscored. During the interactions, Nii Adote Obuor II, expressed repulsion at the recent publications that alleged that the Sempe Stool and it elders were against an intended demolition by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) at Akokorfoto in Dansoman, to pave way for development. According to them, they have no strength to battle the Mayor in the course of his work; especially a legally-backed demolition exercise of the sort. Assuring him of their full support, the elders, including the Mantse implored the Mayor and the Assembly to follow due process and carry out the demolition and do so in the interest of development. The Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, who received the Sempe Chief and his elders, indicated that the government including the AMA does not enstool or distool chiefs hence they are going to work with the judgment recognizing Nii Adote Obuor II as the legitimate Sempe Mantse. He also urged the chief to send a copy of the judgment to the Chieftaincy Ministry for them to be recognized there as well. The Mayor also averred the intended demolition of Akokorfoto was based on a Court order served on the A.M.A which in all extent must be carried out. He further stated that the Assembly as an institution and a developing authority will do all it can to ensure that the communities it serves see total development and that any attempt by group of people to stall that agenda would not be harboured. Dr. Vanderpuije assured Nii Adote Obuor II and his people that the assembly will continue to push its developmental agenda forward especially in areas of education, health and sanitation. The Assembly, he stated, welcomes the needed relationship that exist between the AMA and the traditional council and hence will extend that same relationship to the Sempe Stool. The Mayor promised to build one of the ongoing Millennium schools at Chorkor with modern facilities to boost education in the area since there was no school there.
