$15m Project To Arrest Dum-So In Ashanti

A $15 million transmission station is being constructed by the government at Anwomaso near Kumasi to ensure reliability and sustained electricity supply in and around Kumasi and the Ashanti Region in general. The project would provide 130 megawatts of power in the governments bid to add 400 megawatts to power generation in the country. The facility, the second largest in the country, which started two and half years ago, is nearing completion. This came to light when the Energy Minister, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, inspected the facility last Monday, during a working visit. The Minister learnt that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is being supplied with 25 megawatts of power from the facility which is currently on test. The Minister said the facility was part of efforts by the government to expand transmission of electricity and ensure increased generation capacity and reliability. He hoped the infamous dum-so, dum-so refrain would soon be over in the Ashanti Region with the swinging into operation of the facility soon, as the Mahama-led administration was aggressively tackling the energy crisis. Earlier, at Bosomkyekye in the Mampong Municipality, the Minister commissioned the supply of electricity to seven communities, namely, Bosomkyekye, Woraso, Sataso, Dome, Abuontem, Timber Nkanta and Bobin. Minister Armah Buah announced that the government was determined to ensure that all communities were connected to the national grid by 2016, instead of 2020, as had been programmed initially. The Minister hoped about 1,000 communities more would enjoy electricity, and said however, that the government would be encouraged in this direction by communities which embark on community-initiated and self-help projects, instead of communities waiting for the government to do development projects for them. Nana Kwame Ofori, Chief of Bosomkyekye, thanked the Minister and the government for the extension of electricity to the communities, and appealed that other communities not yet connected to the national grid in the area be considered in due course.
