Water Metre Thief Jailed 18 Months

A Koforidua Circuit Court has sentenced an 18 year - old washing bay attendant, Kwame Amo to 18 months in prison for stealing water metres belonging to the Ghana Water Company Limited. He pleaded guilty to the counts of stealing and causing unlawful damage to a property. The prosecutor, Inspector Ben Annor told the court presided over by Mr. Ebenezer Osei Darko that one Justice Sam Agortey, a teacher and resident of Betom, a surburb of Koforidua and some neighbours had been experiencing and complaining bitterly about the theft of water metres serving their various homes. Efforts made to curb the situation proved futile until at about 3.30 am on July 23, 2014 when a witness saw the accused person breaking a metre which belonged to the Ghana Water Company Limited after which he took it away. Luck however ran out for the accused as the complainant spotted, chased and arrested him before being handed over to the police. A search later in his room revealed five other stolen metres. After further investigations the accused was charged with the offences.
