Energy Commission Institutes Rewards For Low Consumers

The Energy Commission has instituted a national competition to reward electricity consumers whose consumption rates decline drastically for three consecutive months starting from now (August) to October. Mr Victor Owusu, Public Affairs Manager of the Energy Commission announced this at a public forum organised by the Commission in Tamale on Monday for residents of the metropolis to sensitize them on the need to conserve energy. Mr Owusu said the competition formed part of the �Save a Watt Campaign� launched by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in June and being spearheaded by the Energy Commission to sensitize the public to cultivate the habit of conserving energy. To partake in the competition, consumers are to mail their electricity bill sheets for the three months to the Energy Commission to determine the drop in their consumption rates and select the ones which record the highest drop in consumption. He said prizes to be won included installation of solar panels on the house of the first winner, a double-door refrigerator for the second winner and an LED Television for the third winner. Mr Owusu said reducing electricity consumption through the use of energy efficient appliances and putting off lights when not needed would conserve energy which is crucial to the development of the country. Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, the Deputy Northern Regional Minister, advised all to take steps possible to reduce their energy consumption rates to make power available for other uses to improve productivity. Kojo Antwi, Musician and Energy Conservation Ambassador, spoke about lifestyles that led to increased energy consumption and advised people to put off their gadgets when leaving the house or going to bed to conserve energy.
