BECE For Private Candidates Takes off Next Year

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for the first batch of private candidates has been scheduled for February 16 to 20 next year. According to a statement signed by the Principal Public Affairs Officer of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, an on-line registration for the examination would begin on September 1, and would include biometric details of candidates. As part of the registration requirement, re-sitters are expected to provide the index number and year of examination for their previous sitting of the BECE. Students currently in Junior High Schools are not qualified to register for the examination. Unqualified candidates caught taking the examination will have their registration nullified and be barred from taking any WAEC examination for 2 years, it said, and added that prospective candidates were restricted on the number of subjects to write. It said the examination would be conducted in all district capitals throughout the country provided the number of candidates for the exam was 200 and more. In situation where the number of candidates for the examination is less than 200, it said the center would be moved to the nearest center or district to make the conduct of the examination viable. The statement indicated that continuous assessment scores would not be required for the examination and noted that the grading of candidates would be based solely on their final examination scores as done for the WASSCE for private candidates. A handbook containing the syllabuses, scheme of examination, specimen questions and rules and regulations for the examination is being prepared in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, and would be published soon for the guidance of prospective candidates. Candidates may download a copy of the form from WAEC website when ready, it said. Results of the examination will be released in May 2015.
