Government Urged To Settle NHIS Indebtedness

The Chief Executive Officer of Perfector of Sentiment (POS) Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, Mr. Jonathan Osei-Owusu, has appealed to the government to settle the numerous National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) debts, including those owed the Christian Health Association of Ghana. The refusal to accept the NHIS cards by the Christian Health facilities in the country has denied many patients access to quality health care in many rural communities, as well as urban centres. He made the call during a free medical screening exercise organised for the people of Basofi Ningo, in the Assin North Municipality of the Central Region. Mr. Osei-Owusu advised the people to be mindful of what they eat, especially at a time when the cholera and Ebola diseases are killing many people in the world. On her part, the Assin North Municipal Director of Health Services, Mrs. Georgina Asimadi, stated that the municipality had only seven CHPS compounds serving over 116 communities, and that the re-introduction of the cash and carry system at the Christian Health facilities had resulted in many patients in the municipality resorting to unorthodox medications. She mentioned medical equipment, bad road networks, maternal mortality, high teenage pregnancies, malaria and pneumonia as very pervasive in the area. Mrs. Asimadi appealed to the government to expedite action on the allowances for the Community Health Officers working in the various CHPS Compounds, who have not been paid for more than two years. She was grateful to the POS Foundation and the Doctors Act for their timely intervention, but was quick to appeal to the government to take measures to avert the situation. The Chief of Basofi Ningo, Nene Nartey Kyekyemana, also expressed gratitude to the POS Foundation and the Doctors Act for the free medical screening of the people of Basofi Ningo. The Chief lamented the neglect of Basofi Ningo, and appealed to the government to fix their bad road networks and other projects some of which the community had even begun.
