Traders Urge Government To Deal With Economic Difficulties

Some traders and owners of small scale businesses have called for immediate steps to solve the depreciation of the cedi against the dollar as it is impacting negatively on their operations. Speaking to the GNA on the current economic situation, most traders and business owners expressed worry about the effects of the economic hardship and the low patronage of goods and services. Madam Rose Donkor, a bakery owner, told the GNA that her capital had virtually run out as prices of her inputs such as margarine, flour and sugar are going up on daily. She said the price of margarine, which sold for GH₵86.00 per 20 kilogram is now going for GH₵132.00 while the price of a bag of flour moved up from GH₵90.00 to GH₵150.00 in the last few months as well as sugar which has seen upward adjustment from GH₵83.00 to GH₵145.00. "The situation is worrying for a small business owner who has employed about 10 workers," she said adding that she would soon be forced to lay off some of her workers. Madam Esther Fosu, a trader, appealed to the government to do something to save the situation because this was a difficult moment. Mr Kofi Ackon also thanked the President for efforts to save the situation. He said some of the traders were taking advantage of the depreciation of the cedi to rampantly increase prices of goods.
