AMA Official Justifies Waste Collection Rates Hike

The Director of Public Health at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Dr Simpson Anim Boateng has described the revised charges for waste collection in the metropolis as reasonable and realistic. According to him, the new charges will go a long way to help waste management companies do their work effectively. Dr Boateng was explaining the recent announcement by the AMA that it was considering increasing the fees it charges for waste collection following a request from waste management companies. Per the new fees, each household in first class residential areas such as Cantonments, Airport and East Legon, would pay GH100 a month for their waste to be collected. Confirming the new charges on Joy FM, Dr Boateng said realistically, what they have been charging is nothing to write home about. In fact, it may also be a contributing factor to the filth that we have around because their vehicles were breaking down and there was no money to repair them so we thought we should come out with realistic fees for them. So, for a residential area, paying GH100 for the whole month will come to less than GH2 a day and I think it is very reasonable, he added. The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije on Friday announced an upward review of charges for garbage collection in the metropolis. According to him, first class residential areas would pay GH₵ 100, the second class areas; GH₵ 60, and third and fourth class areas; GH₵20 while industrial entities and commercial areas would pay GH₵ 200 and GH₵ 150 respectively.
