A 46-year-old carpenter from Frankadua, Richard Dziwornu, who appeared before the Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court for stealing, got the people in the court room laughing with his plea of guilty with explanation when his charge was read to him.
He quickly said � My Lord, infact I had been seeing the items at the police station for a long time and I thought the police did not need them, hence my decision to go for them.�
The Presiding Judge, Mr Asmah Akwesi Asiedu, however, said his explanation was not tangible enough and therefore found him guilty and convicted him accordingly.
The accused was bonded to be of good behaviour for a period of 12 months or in default serve six months in hard labour.
He was also made to pay GH�3,200. being the cost of the items to the Frankadua Police Station.
The police was ordered to return Dziwornu�s motor bike that they had seized.
ASP Richmond Akwasi Yeboah, who prosecuted, told the court that the complainant was the station officer in charge of the Frankadua Police Station and the accused also resides close to it.
He said for sometime now, there had been series of theft of parts of cars and motorbikes that had been involved in accidents and were parked on the premises of the police station.
He said on July 17, 2014, the station orderly detected that the rear tyres of a motorbike parked in front of the charge office had been stolen.
According to the prosecutor, on August 5, 2014, the police spotted the missing tyres on the motorbike of the accused person during a funeral ceremony in the town.
He was, therefore, arrested and the motor bike impounded for investigation and was later charged with the offence.
