ECOWAS Military Chiefs Ends Meeting In Accra

The ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of the Defence Staff in West Africa has ended a three-day meeting in Accra, on security concerns affecting the sub region. The 34th Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff was on the theme: �Strengthening ECOWAS Military Cooperation for Peace, Stability and Development.� Admiral Mathew Quashie, Chairman of ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of the Defence Staff and Ghana�s Chief of Defence said the committee is capable of using home grown efforts to solve home grown problems and thanked foreign partners for their support to the sub-regional efforts. Admiral Quashie said the committee has had fruitful deliberations, which would go a long way to foster a safe and secure sub-region which would contribute to global peace. He commended the Nigerian government and Armed Forces for their initiative in tackling the Boko Haram menace and pledged the unflinching support of the committee to assist in dealing with the situation. Mrs Salamatu Hussani Suleiman, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, thanked the Admiral for the able leadership he provided during the meeting. Mrs Suleiman said the committee would make all efforts possible to ensure that the appropriate measures are put in place to make the maritime Zone E Pilot Project serve as an impetus for the total efforts to secure the seas. She also thanked President John Dramani Mahama, Chairman of ECOWAS for making Ghana the hub to ensure that help is extended to other West African countries. Mr Akwesi Quartey, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister thanked the security personnel from the sister countries for attending the meeting, adding, that this would contribute immensely to the development and implementation of plans outlined. Mr Quartey said this would make the people have confidence and not live in fear in other to attain peace and security to achieve economic development. He thus thanked the Chief of Defence Staff, the FCs and the troops contributing countries for their readiness and commitment to contribute to the prevailing peace in the Republic of Guinea Bissau and Mali.
