More Trouble For CHRAJ Boss As Rent Control Wades Into Housing Saga!

The woes of the Commissioner for Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Lauretta Vivian Lamptey, seem far from over, as the Rent Control Department has waded into her rent saga, condemning CHRAJs decision to pay rent advance in excess of the mandatory six months. For her to go and pay rent in excess of six months is another violation of the rent law, Section 25 of the Rent Act 220, 1963. It frowns on it. And for her, a commissioner and a lawyer to do this, I dont know, God save us, the Chief Rent Officer decried. According to the Chief Rent Officer, Addo Soin Dombo, the commission also violated the rent laws by paying the Commissioners rent in dollars. He is therefore calling for punitive measures against house owners who quote prices in dollars. Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Dombo said the CHRAJ Boss has violated the rent law saying, this is a clear violation of the rent law and Im surprised of a person of her stature, who should know best, she is a lawyer, shes supposed to be implementing laws. He continued that For her to go and pay in dollars is another issue. We dont spend dollars in Ghana here. So what do you want the other people to do? It is illegal, we dont spend dollars in Ghana here, we spend cedis. He also called on government to take punitive measures against all landlords who charged in dollars. From his own words: I think the government should take it up and come up with punitive measures against all landlords who charge in dollars. Starting even with the government, the government should stop charging their properties in dollars. The CHRAJ Commissioner is yet to recover from the allegations that she has been spending whopping $180,000 on rent and also failing to prosecute public officials implicated in corrupt scandals.
