Govt Welcomes Audit Of CHRAJ (AUDIO)

Communications Minister, Dr. Edward Omane-Boamah says government will abide by any decision or recommendation that will come from the Auditor-Generals investigation into alleged misappropriation on the part of CHRAJs boss, Lauretta Lamptey. He said even though the Commission is an independent constitutional body, we must also be mindful of the fact that the Commission and other such bodies are funded by tax revenue, and allegations of misuse of such funds must be looked into. The head of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) paid close to $5,000 monthly rent on her plush AU Village apartment for 33 months while over $180,000 was being spent to renovate her official bungalow. Miss Lamptey is currently living in a hotel at a daily rate of $456.25. Since the news broke, several civil society groups have raised serious concerns over the huge expenditure on the accommodation of the Commissioner of CHRAJ. They have described the expenditure as constituting an injustice, wasteful and an open loot of state resources. Speaking in an interview on Peace FM morning show Kokrokoo, Dr. Omane Boamah, said even though it is an independent body there are other institutions like the Auditor Generals department. CHRAJ is funded by tax revenue and so if the money has been used for something, Auditor General has the right to look into it According to him, under public service regulations, all state officials who are entitled to official bungalows but are not allocated same may only collect twenty percent (20%) of their salary for accommodation; hence if it exceeds, Auditor General needs to look into it. Whether you are a political appointee or not, there are rules and regulations that must be followed and so if they are bridged you must face the consequenceswe serve at the pleasure of the good people of Ghana.
