Newmont Ghana Bags Another Mine Safety Award

Newmont Ghana�s Ahafo Mine has emerged winner of this year�s Zone I Mine Safety and first Aid competition. The annual competition, organized under the auspices of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission, was hosted by Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd in Awaso under the theme: If it�s not safe, don�t do it. It was aimed at bringing together mining companies and their host communities towards creating safety and first aid awareness among themselves. This year�s competing companies were Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, Ghana Bauxite Company, and Kinross Chirano Gold Mines Limited. Ghana Bauxite Company Limited, Awaso, won in the community category of the competition. According to the Communications Manager of Newmont Ghana Gold Ltd (Ahafo Mine), Agbeko Azumah, the victory, the second since 2012, is testament to the company�s strict adherence to high safety standards in its operations. In 2013, Newmont Ghana was adjudged the most improved mine in safety performance by the inspectorate division of the Ghana Mineral�s commission. The company has been certified by international safety body OSHAS and is a signatory to the international Cyanide Management Code. Winners of the two categories, Newmont Ghana Gold Ltd (Ahafo Mine) and Kinross Chirano Gold Mines Limited will represent the Zone at the National Competition in the mine and Community categories respectively in November this year. The CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Sulemana Koney, in a speech read on his behalf, at the competition, reiterated the relevance of the minerals and mining industry to the Ghanaian economy and urged government and all other stakeholders to continue supporting the industry in diverse ways to ensure mutual benefit for mining companies and the country as a whole.
