Danger In Tema As Market Women Sell In Filth

Today can report that residents in Tema Community One in Tema in the Greater Accra region are seriously grappling with sanitation problems. The situation is that the central market at Tema Community One near the Tema Presbyterian Church is on a daily basis being swallowed with solid waste which portends danger not only for patrons of the market but residents within the community. What was worrying about the situation was the fact that the central business centre of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has become a dumping ground for refuse. That worrying development, this paper gathered, was as a result of the non-availability of waste containers. This week, Today is putting spotlights on waiting sanitation disasters and has started with the Tema metropolis which was currently hit by cholera outbreak. When Today visited the place on Saturday, September 20, 2014 there was no refuse container available for the market women who sell at the market to dump their wastes. As a result, the market women and passers-by had no option than to dispose of their waste on the bare ground. In an interview with Today, some market women who trade at the market described the situation as precarious and disgusting, adding that the place has been turned into an open waste disposal centre, where everyone comes to dump their waste. This disgusting situation has compelled some of the market women who were interviewed by Today to raise questions about the waste management system put in place by the TMA and Zoomlion Company Limited (ZLGL) to dealing with waste, which has hit the harbour city with its accompanying health associated problems. Attempts by Today to speak to the chief executive officer of TMA proved unsuccessful.
