Ghana has taken delivery of an additional 9,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) and 300 non contact thermometers procured by the Inter-ministerial team working on Ebola prevention in Ghana.
The items, according to the Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah were paid for by the government.Ghana has so far, not recorded a single case of the Ebola viral disease.
The government has held discussions with the United Nations advance team on Ebola emergency response in Accra, the Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah has said.
Meanwhile the Minister of Communications has told the Daily Graphic the Chief of Staff, Mr Prosper Bani, chaired a meeting between the government and the United Nations Mission on Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) Wednesday at the Flagstaff House.
He said, briefing the meeting the head of the advance team, Ms Safia Boly indicated that the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN would arrive in Ghana on Monday, September 29, 2014 in response to President John Mahama�s offer to make Ghana the headquarters of UN�s Ebola Emergency Response.
According to Dr Boamah, the head of the team hinted that Ghana should expect about 250 UN personnel out of which 100 would be operating from Ghana.
�With Accra, serving as the headquarters of the UNMEER, it will among other things also host the training centre to train personnel.
The UN team concluded that this is perhaps the shortest period between a UN Security Council decision, adopted in New York last week, and implementation of same,� he said.
Dr Boamah said the team thanked the President and the people of Ghana for the offer to host the headquarters of the UNMEER
�The ensuing discussions related to recruitment of additional personnel from Ghana, customs and aviation clearance, issuance of radio frequency licence, security, health and safety of personnel among other issues. It was firmly noted that the mode of transportation of logistics will be by air, sea and road. Already some logistics including vehicles have arrived in Ghana� he disclosed.
The minister said, the Chief of Staff welcomed the advance team and assured them of President Mahama�s commitment to ensure a fruitful one year UNMEER operations in Ghana.
