Okada Business Booms In Accra

The use of motorbikes for commercial purpose otherwise known as �Okada� has become a huge business, which is competing with commercial vehicles in the Accra metropolis. Today�s investigations revealed that the Okada business is generating a lot of income for many homes. General Manager of Sanli Ghana Limited, dealers in motor bicycles, Mr. Innocent, recounted that when his company started operation two years ago, business was not good. ��but now business is good because of the advent of the Okada business in the capital city, �he disclosed. Another motor bike dealer, who only gave his name as Frank, noted that the demand for motor bikes has gone up, attributing that to huge incomes that accrue to Okada operators. Nonetheless, he said most people prefer the Chinese-made motorbikes. �This is because the Chinese motorbikes are cheaper and have spare parts readily on the market,� he noted. Whilst some operators admitted that the Okada business was risky, he asserted that the business paid more than driving a taxi. His worry was that the continuous harassment that Okada operators endure in the hands of the police on a daily basis. He added that the Okada fare is more expensive than that of a car because of the risks involved. He revealed, for instance, that they charge GH�7 from Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Lapaz and between GH�5 and GH�6 from Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Achimota.
