A Ghana Grid Company (GRIDC)) substation at Winneba junction in the Central Region was gutted by on Saturday night. The fire left Winneba and many surrounding towns and villages without power. ECG District Manager Noel Quarshie told that “about 7pm we saw a bright light in town so we quickly rushed there to see what was happening and we realized the GRIDCO substation was engulfed with fire. We did the necessary arrangements to get the fire service down, to get Tema to switch off the station to allow fire service to quench the fire” The station serves areas like Apam, Kasoa, Winneba, Swedru, among others. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service rushed to the scene to douse the fire. The cause of the fire outbreak is unknown but the main transformer burnt down completely. It is unclear yet when electricity supply to the communities will be restored but engineers of the company are expected at the site on Sunday to fix the problem. Two of the fire officers were knocked unconscious in their attempt to quench the fire. This was after inhaling the toxic fumes but they are currently responding to treatment. DO3 Awotwe, the Regional Fire Service safety Officer told it took his men about 2 hours to douse the fire. “When we got there the control panel room and the transformers were on fire, we quickly mobilized fire engines from Agona Sweduru, Winneba and Apam to bring the fire under control.”
