Illegal Electric Power Connection Kills Hairdresser

A 26-year-old hairdresser was electrocuted last Saturday, when she attempted to illegally connect electric power from a source to her room at Gbetsile Soldier Line in the Kpone Katamanso District of Greater Accra. The deceased, identified as Hannah Appiah, was said to have recently moved to the community. She was said to have attempted in using wires to connect the power from a source nearby to link the uncompleted structure where she lived with her family. According to residents, the deceased�s husband, Kwaku Yeboah, a mason had previously managed to illegally connect electric power from nearby sources, which they used for domestic purposes including watching television and listening to radio. On the day of the incident, Hannah was said to have tried to connect wires from their usual source to watch TV, but was electrocuted. At the time of the incident, she was carrying her one and half year old baby boy, who was incidentally thrown off her back by the force of the electrocution. The baby however survived. Her 10-year-old boy was said to have raised the alarm She was rushed to the Tema General Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Tema General Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy whiles investigations continue. The Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri who confirmed the incident advised the general public to be weary of the way they connect electric power from illegal sources. She said using electricity without going through the proper channel was criminal and punishable by law, and urged the public to report anyone found to be illegally using electricity to the appropriate authorities.
