The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has told Citi News that up to thirteen Special Schools across the country will be forced to close down if government fails to pay grants owed them before the end of October.
Government since January has not paid their subventions for feeding and utilities; a situation which caused delays in the reopening of the schools.
The Executive Director of GNAD, James Sambian speaking to Citi News lamented that �If payment is not made within the next couple of days, am sure that most of the schools would close down.�He said; �Right now the schools are not able to get the required materials and food stuff to keep running the schools because they�ve credited and they have not been able to get any more credit from their suppliers.�
He said they have petitioned the Ministry of Education to have the issue resolved pleading that �they should as a matter of urgency try and resolve this issue, and particularly because these are persons with disabilities.�
�So if grants for schools are delayed, at least considerations should be given to schools which are schools for persons with disability, so that at least government can take the immediate step to try and resolve their problems first before they consider the other schools that are also involved,� he opined.
