NPP Delegates Must Elect A Candidate Ghanaians Will Want To Vote For As President

The national presidential election result is of more importance than the internal presidential primaries in the greater scheme of things. The party has always been united in support of our chosen flagbearer and with the huge logistical and financial resources available to the Presidential Candidate, it is expected that victory will be delivered instead of consistent failure and excuses. In the history of our party, it is only Nana Akufo-Addo who has enjoyed massive support, especially, from party members, civil society, religious leaders, international organizations and world leaders; however, he has sent and kept the party in opposition. The fact is that, Mr. Alan Kyerematen has never been given the opportunity to lead our great party. It is, therefore, out of place for people to equate the monumental failure of Nana Akufo-Addo to retain the party in power in 2008 and also the excruciating defeat in 2012, to the inability of Mr. Alan Kyerematen to lead the party on two occasions, though, on his first attempt in 2007, he for the sake of party unity graciously decided to step down for Nana Akufo-Addo, as a result of the sharp division and tension that had characterized the party then. The two circumstances are parallel, if logic is to reign. It is common knowledge that the NDC rigged the 2000 election, yet Mr. Agyekum Kufuor went ahead against all odds and won the presidential election. The magic was that his personality could not be matched by that of his opponent Vice-President John Mills (as he was then). Mr. Agyekum Kufuor even won in Vice-President John Mills home town, an indication of personality contest. Mr. Agyekum Kufuor lost to President John Rawlings because; the latter had an extraordinary personality and was even admired by some NPP members. Both Nana Akufo-Addo and John Mills, lacked the personality, however, the peaceful air surrounding Mills gave him an advantage over Nana Akufo-Addo. Again Vice-President John Mahama's (as he was then) personality gave him one touch victory over Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 general elections. The NPP's problem is the candidate we have been presenting to the Ghanaian electorates and the manner in which our election campaigns have been conducted considering the pool of resources and logistics at our disposal. It is the NPP that we need as Government but not an individual, so lets think outside the box and present a candidate with a national appeal who can deliver us from another opposition. The task of identifying a candidate with a cross-sectional appeal is simple. Ask a non-NPP voter, whether floating voters or sympathizers of other political parties, who among the two leading candidates (Alan Kyerematen and Nan Akufo-Addo) will they vote for if presented as a Presidential Candidate of the NPP. The outcome of this simple test should inform the partys choice as to who best suits to lead the party to power in 2016.
