Two hundred and six persons have been killed in motor traffic accidents in Brong-Ahafo Region between January and September this year. The accidents involved 1,046 vehicles. Mr. Yaw Yeboah Asante, Brong-Ahafo Regional Planning Officer of the Ghana National Road Safety Commission, announced this at the inauguration of the Nkoranza Municipal Road Safety Committee at Nkoranza. According to him, a total of 752 accidents were recorded within the period with 993 persons sustaining various degree of injuries. Mr. Asante urged other stakeholders in the communities to join in the campaign for promoting best road safety practices for all road users to minimize the carnage on our roads. He announced that his outfit had identified areas such as the Techiman-Sunyani, Techiman-Kintampo, Sunyani-Bechem and Sunyani-Dormaa Highways as accident-prone places in the region, adding it was the objective of the Commission to ensure that people from the grassroot observed the required road-safety practices The Nkoranza Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSOP) Joseph Owusu commended the Commission for inaugurating the Committee that would help save the lives of people in the Municipality. DSOP Owusu emphasized the need for drivers as well as motor-bike riders to be extra vigilant on the roads especially as �we approach the Christmas festivities to make the event accident-free�. He also called on all road users to pay much attention to the road signs post on the roads and follow the instructions, saying, those signs �guide drivers in their movements and also check against accidents�. He also cautioned drivers against driving under the influence of alcohol, stressing that any drunken driver found on the roads would be dealt with accordingly. He urged religious leaders, Assembly-members, Unit Committees and Traditional Rulers to join in the campaign to promote road safety practices in the communities. The membership of the Committee were drawn from the Ghana Police Service (GPS), the Ghana Fire Service (GFS), the various Transport Unions, the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Municipal Assembly, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana News Agency (GNA), all operating in the Nkoranza Municipality.
