Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, has ordered the demolishing of buildings at Glefe in the Ablekuma South District of Accra.
The buildings which are sited closer to the Panbros River in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly area have been identified to be unsafe for human habitation by a team from the Assembly.
The team comprised heads of departments, who were on a routine inspection of road projects in the metropolis led by Dr Vanderpuije.
Dr Vanderpuije also instituted security surveillance in the area to ensure that no waste is dumped into the river.
He said: �If the river overflows its banks it is the same people who would call on government or the National Disaster Management Organisation for assistance.�
He expressed dissatisfaction about indiscipline in Accra and gave the assurance that the AMA would ensure that its bye-laws are enforced to the letter.
Mr Emmanuel Boryor, Assemblyman for Glefe told Ghana News Agency that he personally asked the developers to stop work along the river banks, but they did not adhere to his advice.
The inspection team also cited sign posts that have been mounted on pavements which had blocked the movement of pedestrians, compelling the AMA Boss to order their removal within a week.
Dr Vanderpuije told journalists that AMA has a statutory obligation to maintain law and order in the metropolis, saying: �We will do so without fear or favour to ensure that Accra is cleaner than before.
He said the choice for Accra as the Millennium City calls for special programmes to give the metropolis a new look for the honour to ensure total development.
