Tema 2014 Crime Up By 157 Cases

With the year 2014 only a month away to close, a total of 395 major crimes have been recorded between January and September as compared to 238 major offences for the same period 2013 in Tema. The Tema figure, showing an increase of 157 cases, translating into 665, saw robbery and rape cases registered in Tema increase by 255.9% and 31.3% respectively. Incidences of murder, defilement and narcotics, however, decreased by 30%, 12 %and 11.8% respectively. The analysis of the statistics, the Director General of Police of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Commissioner of Police (COP) Prosper Agblor, consequently explained that there is more to be done in the Tema Region as far as crime control is concerned. COP Agblor gave the figures at the Quality and Control Training School of the Ghana COCOBOD in Tema, where he officially closed a two-week training programme for AIDES-to-CID for the Tema Police personnel. The training, which saw 105 police participants graduating, was aimed at improving their skills and overall performance on the job. Addressing the participants, COP Prosper Agblor said, It is important for the participants to note that it is suicidal for us as police officers to remain static in our methods and tactics of crime prevention and detection. There is, therefore, the need to constantly train our staff to enable them acquire the required skills and knowledge so as to be abreast of crime trends. It is in light of this that he said such training programmes are organised to build the capacity of detectives countrywide. The participants were taken through topics including Crime Scene Investigations, how to use the various CID Forms, Criminal Investigations, Criminal Procedure, Law of Evidence and Report Writing Techniques used for searching. The others were Criminal Law, how to interview and interrogate and Scientific Aid to Criminal Investigations; and the subjects, COP Agblor explained, were carefully selected bearing in mind the fact that criminals have become sophisticated as a result of advancement in technology. He urged participants to perform their duties with a sense of discipline, professionalism, diligence and above all work within the confines of the law. The Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, commending the participants and facilitators for their tireless efforts during the training, encouraged the personnel to remain professional in the face of all challenges and temptations. She warned that any act of corruption and unprofessionalism will not be tolerated by the Command and the Police Administration, and I want to warn that any officer found culpable of any of these will face disciplinary action.
