2 Suspected Robbers Die In Shootout With Tema Police

Two men, believed to be armed robbers, have been shot dead by the police in Tema after the robbers had allegedly attacked a forex bureau at Community Nine. A third person managed to escape after sustaining gunshot wounds during a shootout with the police. Two pump action guns and a pistol, with 17 live ammunitions, were retrieved from the suspected robbers. The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary. Their identities are yet to be established. The Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mrs Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, told journalists that about 8 a.m. last Wednesday, the police received a distress call that some suspected armed robbers had attacked a forex bureau at Meridian Zone in Community Nine. She said the suspected robbers, wielding pump action guns, entered the forex bureau and held a messenger, who later sustained injury, hostage. She said the robbers fired at the inner glass door and gained access to the forex bureau. Mrs Vib-Sanziri said a teller at the forex bureau, who heard the noise, went out but one of the robbers pointed a gun at him. She said the teller managed to escape to alert neighbours, who also called the police. The police commander said the robbers tried to get away during the shootout, in the process of which they fired at the left thigh of a 48-year-old woman and the stomach of a 26-year-old man who was returning home after attending the call of nature. The two victims are currently receiving treatment at the Tema General Hospital. Mrs Vib-Sanziri said the robbers, in their attempt to flee, snatched a red Pontiac Vibe saloon car, with registration number GT 9964-11, and also damaged two other vehicles. But they were intercepted by the police. She said during the ensuing exchange of fire, two of the suspected robbers were hit by shots fire by the police. The two died when they were being conveyed to hospital.
