Chief Imam Commends Vanderpuye For New Role

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, has commended the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye, for his appointment as President of the Global Alliance of Mayors and Leaders of Africa and African Descent. He said Mr Vanderpuije�s achievement was due to his dedication and hard work aimed at improving the city of Accra. Sheikh Sharubutu gave the commendation when he paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive of the AMA in his office in Accra. President of Mayors Mr Vanderpuye was elected the president of heads of cities at the second meeting of the Global Alliance on September 19, 2014, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The election was in recognition of his immense contribution towards the development of the African people through education, health and social advancement. With the elevation, Mr Vanderpuye has become the first African to be elected the president of the Global Alliance of Mayors and Leaders. Prayer Sheikh Sharubutu urged Mr Vanderpuye, to let the international honour inspire him to continue to work hard to improve the living standards of the residents in Accra. He prayed for the MCE of Accra, saying, �May God fortify and strengthen you in your new capacity and make you attain greater heights.� Inspiration and assurance Mr Vanderpuye said he was inspired by the words of wisdom and encouragement from the National Chief Imam. �I am grateful and humbled for being recognised,� he said. He gave the assurance that he would work harder to improve the status of the city of Accra. 2015 Projects The MCE used the occasion to outline a number of projects that the assembly had earmarked to undertake in 2015. He said the projects included the construction of about 400 pavilions that would serve temporarily as classrooms, as well as 10 �millennium city schools�. Furthermore, he said, the assembly would undertake a project to modernise market centres in Accra. The assembly would also rehabilitate some community centres to be used as recreational venues for the youth and for social gathering by the traditional authorities in Accra. Mr Vanderpuye in turn commended Sheikh Sharubutu for fostering peace in the country and for his immense support during the national sanitation day exercise that was held recently. He honoured the Chief Imam by bestowing on him the auspicious role of a Special Ambassador of the assembly.
