Kwesi Pratt Warns VRA

One of Ghanas finest socio-political commentators and Newspaper Editor, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has sent a word of caution to the Volta River Authority (VRA) not to endanger the integrity of the Akosombe project. According to him, he has gathered that the water levels in the Akosombo dam has dwindled and is generating an intense controversy and debate in VRA over what to do. He has however registered his upright disagreement to any attempt that has the potency of compromising the integrity of the Akosombo project. I am fully opposed to any move which will compromise the integrity of the Akosombo project Its better to suffer dumsor-dumsor now than to compromise the integrity of the Akosombo dam he said. In his findings, there is a team of highly competent engineers at the VRA who are planning to endanger the true capacity of the system by drawing more power to meet the need of consumers. In the VRA, there is a debate about what to do. And there is a group in the VRA, highly qualified people, and engineers and so on, who are saying that in the past, when the water levels was so low and the government was been embarrassed, they compromised the integrity of the system by drawing more power, and that we can do it now and hope that by June, the rain should be sufficient in order to break up the levels, he revealed. But in an interview with Radio Gold Saturday, Mr. Kwesi Pratt questioned the rationale behind the move since there is no explicit guarantee of rain in the future. What if by June the rains are not sufficient? You will destroy this load project. The integrity of the whole system would have been destroyed, he lamented. Touching on the sweeping debt levels the power producer, the Editor disclosed that The level of indebtedness of VRA for fuels which has been already purchased as used is 180million dollars. He further revealed that if nothing is done by government in the current VRA Debt brouhaha, the power situation may deteriorate. VRA said if they dont get [immediately], between 40million and 80million dollars to bring in fuel, the power situation will become worse than it is today, he added.
