Milk Is Harmful To Babies

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has advised nursing mothers to desist from feeding their babies below one year with Milk on the market. According to the GHS, milk has adverse effects on infants which may even cause death. This was disclosed by Esther Mantey, a Public health Nurse with the Suhum Municipal Health Directorate during a sensitization durbar on safe motherhood organized by the health directorate for nursing mothers in the Municipality. She explained that pasteurized milks are very difficult for infants with fragile intestines because digestion was very difficult from them and could thus create thick mucus in the infant and block the tiny Eustachian tube which often leads to ear infections from the backup mucus. According to her, it is therefore advisable that, nursing mothers feed their babies less than one year with breast milk and infants milk which have been manufactured purposely for infants to help safeguard the health and wellbeing of their babies. Mrs. Mantey counseled nursing mothers to take the nutrition of their infants serious since it also account for infant mortality. Explaining further, Mrs. Mantey said nursing mothers must breast feed their babies for at least six months to help them become healthy. The Suhum Municipal health Director, Dr. Sumel Agyeman, stated that, the municipal health directorate has targeted to reduce infant mortality to zero having achieved zero institutional maternal death this year. He revealed that, the safe motherhood program is part of plans to educate nursing mothers and women in the municipality on ways to feed their babies in order to eradicate child mortality. The Queen mother of Suhum, Nana yaa Sakyibea commended health workers at the various health facilities in the Municipality for changing their attitude towards pregnant women when the issue was laid before the table of the health directorate by the Traditional Council. The Queen mother assured that, joint effort by the Traditional Council and the health directorate has produced positive impact as far as maternal mortality is concern in the Municipality. She appealed to government to subsidize baby foods for nursing mothers in deprived communities to enable them give quality and nutritious food to their tables.
