The campaign for better discipline and cleaner environment, embarked upon by the late Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, last week received a shocking slap from the stalwarts of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), when the party boycotted a sanitation day named after him on the altar of political expediency. His still grieving wife, Hajia Ramatu Mahama, was left alone to take part in cleaning parts of the Cantonments area in Accra , together with the Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Julius Debrah. Three days after shunning an event that the late ex-Vice President loved doing, stalwarts of the NPP, including its flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, were to gather inside the Banquet Hall of the State House, to celebrate the second anniversary of his sad passing. The event dubbed, �the 2nd Annual Alhaji Aliu Mahama Memorial Lectures� was on the theme �One Ghana, Securing our Future�, at the time of going to press, the Asantehene, His Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who coincidentally has been taking part in the cleanup exercise, was to chair the event according to Nana Akomea, the NPP Director of Communications. The two National Sanitation exercises, have seen prominent personalities such as President, John Dramani Mahama, Vice-President, Paa Kwesi Amissaqh -Arthur, Ministers of State and District and Municipal Chief Executives, coming out in their numbers to clean their environments in the wake of cholera outbreak, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of Ghanaians. President Mahama, last Saturday joined the people of Kumasi to clean the metropolis, together with the Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong and the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Kojo Bonsu. In Accra, the widow of the late Vice President, Hajia Mahama, after taking part in the exercise, highly commended President Mahama, for honouring his late husband with the second National Sanitation exercise. She said, the family was excited, and appreciated the honour done the departed Vice-President by the government and the people of Ghana. Hajia Ramatu said, the initiative meant Ghanaians still remember the commitment of her late husband towards the campaign against indiscipline. Mr. Debrah, expressed his appreciation of the level of commitment shown by the people to the exercise.
