The chiefs and people of Anyako in the Keta Municipality in the Volta Region have appealed to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing to authorise the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), to take over the management of the Anyako water system. Togbe Tenge Dzokoto Gligui VI, Dufia of Anyako, in a petition forwarded to the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, said the people of Anyako had been without water since 2003. That, he said, had imposed a lot of hardship on them so they had been compelled to use the services of water tankers or buy sachet water from Abor, a nearby town; which drained their financial resources. The Anyako water system, like other community water systems, was meant to operate under the Community Water and Sanitation Agency with community participation. However, some opinion leaders, without the knowledge and consent of the Dufia and his elders, took over the operation of the water system, and that had led to its collapse. The petition, therefore, pleaded with the ministry to allow the Anyako water system to be managed by the GWCL so that it could be rehabilitated for the sake of the suffering people in the community. A correspondence between the GWCL and the ministry sighted by the Daily Graphic indicates the readiness of the GWCL to take over the Anyako system once it gets the green light from the ministry.
