Police Ready For NDC Congress

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has said it is ready for this weekends national delegates congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the NDC would hold its national delegates congress on Saturday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. The police said they had made adequate preparation to provide security for the aspirants, delegates and officials of the Electoral Commission. The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mohammed Yussif Tanko, said the regional command had put up a lot of measures in place to ensure that the congress comes off successfully and peacefully. Although he would not disclose the number of policemen who would be deployed on the day, he said the command had enough men to provide security for all the delegates and other officials who would be attending the congress. We will be looking out for people who would want to take advantage of the large crowd to commit crimes such as phone snatching, pickpocketing and other petty crimes. We will also deploy enough personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in and around the stadium to ensure free flow of traffic so that other people can go about their activities without any hindrance, he said. Notwithstanding their preparedness, the spokesman for the police in the region appealed to the delegates who would be congregating in Kumasi this weekend to comport themselves and to be law-abiding so as to not warrant any action from the police. The police would be deploying water cannons, mount crash barriers, and also erect mobile clinics to provide first aid for those who might need medical attention. Some of the personnel to be deployed on the day would be in riot control gears with tear gas and pepper sprays with other gadgets necessary for crowd control.
