Mrs. Hannah Ocran, Midwife at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital, on Friday appealed to herbalists and attendants at pharmacy and chemical shops to desist from selling abortion drugs to pregnant women to curb numerous induced abortion cases recorded in the Municipality. Mrs. Ocran told the GNA in an interview in Sunyani that since the beginning of the year, the Hospital recorded about 18 cases of induced abortions every month. She said the people, mostly young women, arrived at the Hospital in serious and complicated conditions which needed prompt attention to save their lives. Mrs. Ocran appealed to pharmacy shop attendants and herbalists to direct pregnant women who reported at their shops for drugs to terminate their pregnancies to any nearest health facility as abortion had been legalized at hospitals in the country. She said most pregnant women either inserted such drugs bought at the pharmacy or herbalist shops in their private parts or drank them in their desperate attempt to abort the conception, saying in the process that crude application sometimes caused them to bleed profusely before they were rushed to the hospital. Mrs. Ocran said the Hospital recorded nine births made up of seven females and two males from December 24 to December 25. She said seven of the mothers had normal deliveries and two had Caesarian Section.
